Monoliths on Mars and Phobos

It seems Stanley Kubrick was onto something with his alien black monoliths from 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Recently, two similar monoliths have popped up in the news.

The first was found on a picture from the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. Taken from over 150 miles away, the image shows an oddly squared off something sitting on the surface of Mars.

The image was taking last July, but other recent events have brought new attention to the Martian Monolith photo.

On July 22nd, Buzz Aldrin was on C-SPAN and spoke about a Monolith on the moon of Mars.

That is right. The second man to walk on the surface of the moon wants us to go to Phobos to check out a “very unusual structure on this little potato shaped object”.

Interestingly, the Canadian Space Agency recently funded a unmanned mission to Phobos. The proposed PRIME (Phobos Reconnaissance and International Mars Exploration) landing spot on Phobos is right next to the large building sized monolith.
